In a letter to its customers this week, the U.S. Postal Service warned about identity theft conducted via the mail. While the mail is related to only a small fraction—2 percent—of identity theft cases, John Potter, the postmaster general, says he wants to reduce that number to zero. Tips for keeping your identity safe include shredding all financial documents before tossing them, leaving your Social Security number at home, and never giving out personal information through the mail to unfamiliar companies or people. The Federal Trade Commission says that identity thefts sometimes occur when thieves fill out "change of address" forms for unsuspecting victims and then collect information from bills that arrive at the new address. If bills or credit card statements don't arrive on time, be sure to contact the companies sending them.
2nd Slaughterhouse Worker Arrested In Recall Case
A second fired worker has been arrested in a case involving alleged abuses at a Chino slaughterhouse that led to the nation's largest beef recall. Luis Sanchez surrendered to Chino police Wednesday and pleaded not guilty Thursday to three misdemeanors involving the illegal movement of sick or injured cattle. Prosecutors say he remains in custody in lieu of $15,000 bail and is scheduled for a pretrial hearing next week. An arrest warrant was issued Friday for Sanchez and his Westland/Hallmark Meat Company co-worker Daniel Ugarte Navarro. Navarro was taken into custody previously and released on bail. He faces five felony counts of animal abuse in addition to three misdemeanors. (© 2008 The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.

Bids by hungry contractors have Pennridge salivating
Pennridge School Board this month expects to award contracts for $4.5 million in remediation and renovation projects, and the initial cost indications have officials hopeful they've chosen the right time for the jobs. A complicated asbestos removal project at Bedminster Elementary School as part of a larger $2.9 million renovation package for the 50-year-old building brought proposals from eight companies. Bids ranged as high as $275,000. The apparent low bid was from PDG of Drums, Luzerne County, for $75,527. The project was expected to cost perhaps $30,000 more than that. .
