EU bid to freeze out patio heaters

They have only been popular in the UK for little more than a decade, but patio heaters could become history if MEPs vote to ban them today.

The EU parliament is expected to back a resolution requiring the use of appliances with low energy efficiency to be phased out.

Patio heaters are specifically targeted in the motion, which calls on the EU to act urgently and introduce minimum standards for energy efficiency on such appliances as air-conditioning, television "decoder" boxes and light bulbs. It also calls for the abolition of stand-by mode on electrical appliances.

If the ban comes into effect and is enforced, it could cost pubs, restaurants and caterers in the UK up to £250m in lost revenue per year.

The use of outdoor heaters increased with the new UK smoking ban, as well as growing use at home as garden accessories for the British summer.

Politicos flex muscles in opponents’ areas

Politicians in Haryana have taken a fancy to slug it out in their opponents battlegrounds to make their presence felt.

The trend by now is so prevalent that holding a rally at their home turf has almost become a thing of the past. The trend has also caught the imagination of the man on the street, forcing the politicos to show their political muscle in their arch opponents area of operation.

Although senior politicians have been organising political performances outside their own constituencies or home districts in the past, these were either a part of a statewide political campaign like the one launched by late Devi Lal in 1985 against the Rajiv-Longowal accord or such events marked the end of campaigning before the assembly or parliamentary election in the state.

For several decades, Rohtak remained the first choice of all major political parties and their leaders for hosting campaign-end shows.

Mass. foreclosures rise 128% in January

Nearly 800 foreclosures were recorded in January, the highest number of Bay State homes lost during a single month since August 2007, the Warren Group said today.

The Warren Group of Boston is a provider of local real estate data and the publisher of Banker & Tradesman.

There were 799 foreclosure deeds in January, up 128.3 percent from the 350 deeds in January 2007, the firm said, and January 2008 also marks the highest number of deeds during any month since August 2007, when there were 1,018.

Auction announcements in January reached their highest number since the Warren Group began tracking them in 2005, the firm said, and there were 1,792 announcements in January 2008, up 77.8 percent from the 1,008 in January 2007.

Petitions to foreclose, the first step in the foreclosure process, also increased in December, signaling that Massachusetts problems with foreclosures are far from over, the Warren Group said.
