| Police nab suspect in car theft from local dealership
Following a brief automobile and foot chase Thursday afternoon, Columbus Police Department officers apprehended a suspect who may have stolen a car from Carl Hogan Honda.A white 1998 Toyota Camry was reported missing Nov. 1 from Carl Hogan's Highway 45 North sales lot. A dealership employee gave police the vehicle's identification number and said the car had a discernible crack in its front bumper.Around 1:42 p.m. Thursday, a CPD officer spotted the missing Camry traveling west on Main Street and pulled the driver over.Once the officer had exited his vehicle to approach the Camry, the suspect drove off. .
Kroger plans mega store in Bonsack area
A giant in the grocery business plans to spread its footprint into a growing area of Roanoke County. Kroger officials said Friday that the company will build its largest Roanoke Valley store on a 22.8-acre site at the corner of Valley Gateway Boulevard and U.S. 460 in the Bonsack area. The 84,000-square-foot store will offer a gas station, as do some other Kroger stores. The Cincinnati-based chain is pumping $22.4 million into the development of this grassy site, which is near Integrity Windows, a large manufacturer of windows and doors that opened several years ago. Other retails shops and restaurants are planned adjacent to the new store. Four additional outparcels, for lease or for sale, would front U.S. 460. Kroger will own the retail center, having purchased the land from Fralin & Waldron, a Roanoke real estate company.

Five people were shot dead and at least 13 injured after a gunman dressed in black opened fire and sprayed bullets around a lecture hall at an Illinois university before killing himself. The shooter burst from behind a screen during a geology lecture at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb shortly after 3pm and fired on the 160 students using a shotgun and two handguns. Students frantically scrambled over desks for cover as about 30 rounds were fired across the hall. University authorities said that the gunman, who has been identified as a student, but not from the university, then turned the gun on himself. Campus police refused to release his name. The incident took place in Cole Hall near the King Commons, a central meeting point on the 25,000student campus.
